Be Bright Get Walking Campaign - Ongoing from September 2006The aim of the Be Bright Get Walking campaign is to make children more visible near traffic and encourage more walking to school.
Why Be Bright? Children usually wear dark clothes especially when walking to school which can make it very difficult for drivers to see them, especially on dull days or at twilight. Even in summer visibility can be poor but it can be especially bad in winter. Being seen in time can prevent an accident and may encourage drivers in general to take more care in the area as they will know children are around.
Why Get Walking? We all know the benefits of walking; it’s healthy, environmental, sociable and increases independence. Walking makes it safer for everyone as it reduces congestion by school gates. Your child can learn how to cope with traffic by walking regularly.
Why Be Bright Get Walking? Some parents are wary of letting their child walk to school so they drive, creating more congestion and potential danger for others. By wearing something fluorescent and reflective and being taught road safety skills their children are much safer. This could break the pattern and make parents confident enough to let their child walk.
