Encouraging Others to be Bright
Over the last couple of years fluorescent, reflective clothing has become much more popular and commonplace with adults. Thanks to the increase in popularity of 'Walking Bus' schemes where children wear a 'reflective vest' for safety, more and more children are getting used to the idea too.
Parents want their children to be safe and seen near traffic and we have some tips on how you can encourage your children to be bright.
- if you want your child to keep wearing or using their 'high vis' it is important that they like it!
- Being seen isn't just about wearing a special vest or waistcoat.
- It doesn't have to be yellow or orange (unless for industrial use or in-car use in Europe)...
- Teenagers may still be hesitant about wearing bright colours.
- Adding fluorescent, reflective items to your school uniform list is a fast way to help make all your children safer.
- Be a role model.
Let them help choose the styles or products you are buying.
Other large high vis items including bags, umbrellas and caps are really popular.
Products are available in a range of vibrant fluorescent colours including red, pink and green.
At least make sure they have a good amount of reflective materials on their coats, shoes or bags, which are less conspicuous by day.
This age group tends to be out and about a lot more at night than younger children so it is really important they are kitted out to be seen after dark.
When buying shoes, coats and bags look out for good quality reflective trims. Add reflective tape or shapes to bags. Bear in mind that this is for nighttime and they need something bright in daytime especially if they are cycling.
Some children do not want to stand out from the crowd - but if the 'crowd' are all wearing it then they will not be so self-conscious.
If you are out cycling and especially if you are teaching your chidlren to cycle, make sure you wear your high vis.
