Pupils across Derbyshire Dressed to Impress Thanks BrightKidz.
Using material off cuts from BrightKidz, pupils designed and made fabulous fashion trends for school wear so they can be seen on the journey to school.
Year 10 GSCE textile students from Heritage Mathematics & Computing Specialist School designed and made tabards for Year 6 Clowne junior school pupils, using CAM CAD machinery. The primary school children, from North East Derbyshire, were invited to take part at a Parents Open Evening at the secondary school. This allowed adjustments to be made to the working designs before the final presentation to pupils and Councillors.
Barbara Whapplinton, Year 10 teacher said, “The Dress to Impress campaign was a great way to engage pupils in a joint practical project to make all aware of the importance of wearing something bright and reflective.”
Meanwhile in Erewash, pupils at Ladycross Infant School in Sandiacre designed accessories to attach to bags, coats and hats to give them added visibility. Their work also formed part of “be bright be seen” display.
Co-head teacher Neil Hunt at Ladycross Infants explains, “Walking to school is a good way to keep fit and healthy, and it’s good for the environment. At our school we want to encourage children to walk at least part, if not all, of their journey if they can. We also want to make sure children are safe by getting them to ‘dress in impress’ in something bright so drivers can see them.”
The “Dress to Impress” campaign was part of Derbyshire County Council’s Travel Smart week (20-24 October) to encourage pupils to travel to school in an environmentally friendly way.
Rob Bounds, Derbyshire County Council school travel plan co-ordinator added, “Working with BrightKidz was a great opportunity to expand our Travel Smart campaign to involve pupils from infant age, right up to secondary school students.”
